Roads Service freezes car park charges

There will be no increase to the cost of parking in 98% of Roads Service’s 374 car parks across Northern Ireland, the Department for Regional Development (DRD) has confirmed.

This good news for motorists came from the DRD’s Roads Service Annual Review of Car Park Charges on Wednesday.

However, increased charges will be levied at some busy town centre car parks in Ballymena and Coleraine where demand for spaces often outstrips supply. The revised charges will bring these towns into line with other similar towns in Northern Ireland. The majority of increases are from 30p per hour to 40p per hour and will come into effect on August 22.

A DRD Roads Service spokesperson said: "Off-street car parks help visitors and shoppers contribute to the economy of towns and cities without their parked vehicle causing on-street congestion.

"Charging for parking ensures a good turnover of the most convenient parking spaces, while those who require long term parking can park in the less expensive or free car parks usually located on the periphery of most towns.

"Overall charges are set to recover the full cost of providing the service, including the cost of the sites. This year it has been possible to hold charges at previous levels for the vast majority of car parks."
