Sunblest bakery smashes current ‘hot cross’ record
Sunblest bakers at Allied Bakeries Ireland in Belfast have been recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records for baking the world’s largest ever hot cross bun.
The bakery, which produces over 1.8 million Sunblest Hot Cross buns per year, has put the icing on the cake by entering its name into the record books.
Sunblest smashed the previous record of a bun which weighed 52.08 kilograms by creating a hot cross bun which weighed in at a staggering 81kg. During their record attempt, staff at the bakery used 37.5kg of flour, 16.8 kg of water, 7kg of currants and 6.3kg of sultanas to make the bun.
“Sunblest is the leading Hot Cross Bun manufacturer in Northern Ireland and we have been producing hot cross buns for decades," said Alan Hempton, Managing Director of Allied Bakeries Ireland.
“During discussions about our hot cross bun programme for 2005, a member of staff suggested we try to make the largest hot cross bun in the world. After researching previous world record attempts and with our wealth of experience in making hot cross buns, we decided to give it a go.
“We have been the number one bakery in Northern Ireland for many years and now that we have been officially recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records, in one way, we can claim to be number one in the world,” concluded Alan.
