Young boy treated for severe burns in car explosion

A five-year-old boy has been treated in hospital for severe burns after the petrol tank of a burning car exploded in Londonderry on Monday.

Fire crews were called to Temple Park in Galliagh at about 10pm on Monday following reports of a burning car however the vehicle's fuel tank exploded before they arrived, engulfing Michael McLaughlin.

He was immediately taken to Altnagelvin Hospital with burns to his hands and face and was later transferred to the Royal Hospitals in Belfast. His condition is described as "serious".

A spokesperson for the Fire Service said that a number of children had been around the vehicle shortly before it exploded.

"Early indications are that the fuel tank exploded during the course of the fire and engulfed the child," the spokesperson said.

It is thought the car had been used as a runaround vehicle - an untaxed or insured car.

Workman injured in gas explosion
A man has been injured following a gas explosion at an industrial site in north Belfast. The workman was injured at a demolition site on Hillview Road in the Oldpark area on Friday when the gas cylinder exploded. He was taken to hospital suffering from facial and upper body burns, however it is not known how seriously he was injured.

Bomb Explodes Inside Parked Car
Police in L'Derry have reported that a bomb exploded inside a parked car on Wednesday night. It is understood that the bomb exploded inside the car, which was parked in the residential area of Carrickreagh Gardens, in the Creggan area at about 22:45. No-one was injured in the explosion.
