Hanson announces work on a new Sports Strategy
Sports Minister David Hanson has announced the establishment of a steering group to draw up a new Sports Strategy for Northern Ireland.
The current Strategy for Development of Sport in Northern Ireland, which was originally facilitated by the Sports Council in the mid-90s, expires this year.
Mr Hanson said the context of sport in Northern Ireland has changed radically since that first Strategy was launched, including the formation of the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, the development of Sports Institutes and a greater awareness of the importance of sport in the community.
"Most importantly, London's successful 2012 Olympic and Paralympics bid has put a new impetus on the need for a new Sports Strategy which will guide us through the next decade,” Mr Hanson said. “It will encourage more people throughout Northern Ireland to get involved in sport.
"I have therefore set up a Steering Group which I will chair to oversee the development of the new Strategy for Sport spanning the next eight to ten years. I expect that the Strategy will be completed by Spring 2006." Mr Hanson said that it would be important that the Strategy is one with which stakeholders can identify, reflects the many changes in the sector and is consistent with what Government is seeking to achieve through sport.
"In 21st century Northern Ireland, sport plays a crucial role in everyday life and provides a positive outlet for people's energy and enthusiasm.
"We will be consulting widely and will welcome views from all those concerned with sport in Northern Ireland,” he concluded.
