Irish teenage girls' diets a ‘real concern’
Irish teenage girls are going on crash diets to find love and happiness, research by the University of Ulster has found.
The survey by Elaine Mooney, a Home Economics lecturer at St Angela’s College in Sligo and a doctoral student at UU, revealed that pop icons like Britney Spears, Posh Spice and Beyonce were the role models of many Irish teenagers.
At a recent International Consumer Sciences research conference, organised by the Institute of Consumer Sciences, it was revealed that some 80% of 400 14-16 year-olds who took part in a survey of their eating and dieting habits, said it was important to be slim to attract the attention of boys and achieve self-confidence.
More than seven out of ten (72%) said they were not satisfied with their current body shape/weight and wanted to be slimmer while 46% thought themselves overweight even though visual observation indicated that they were not; 49% reported they had dieted to lose weight with 38% currently on a diet.
The teenagers also regarded the Atkins diet as ‘old hat’ and no longer ‘cool’. One young girl said: “On Atkins you get really bad breath. I would sooner have cancer”. The GI diet was now the slimming plan of choice.
Dr Chris Strugnell, a senior lecturer in Consumer Sciences at UU, said: “These results are a real concern. This is an important time in the life of adolescent girls and they are not only indulging in poor food choices and practices but, more worryingly, are missing important and essential nutrients at this point in their lives”.

Teenagers Arrested After Gliders Attacked With Fireworks
Two teenage boys have been arrested in connection anti-social behaviour and firework incidents in the Stewartstown Road area of west Belfast. On 19 September, it was reported to police that a firework had been thrown onto a Glider bus around 9.45pm on Sunday, September 10.

Two Teenage Boys Die In Drowning Incident
Two 16-year-old boys have died in a drowning incident after getting to difficulty on Lough Enagh, L'Derry. Emergency services were called to Temple Road at around 6.30pm on Monday. One of the boys was taken from the water and rushed to hospital, however he was later pronounced dead. The second boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four Teenage Boys Attacked In Portrush
Four teenage boys have been attacked by a group of between 30 to 50 youths in what police are describing as an "unprovoked and vicious" assault in Portrush. The teen swede approached by the gang who suggested a fight on East Starnd beach at around 7.30pm on Saturday, 15 May. When the boys refused they were assaulted.
