Teenager killed in gun attack in north Belfast

A 19-year-old has been shot and killed in a gun attack in north Belfast this morning.

The attack, which has been blamed on the UVF, took place at around 1.30am when three men forced their way into a house in Dhu Varren Crescent in the Woodvale area of the City.

The victim died later in hospital.

In a separate gun attack a man was shot several times near to Glenbank on the Crumlin Road at around midnight. He is said to be in a critical condition.

Police said that a light-blue Peugeot 405 car found on fire later in Cupar Way in the Shankill area of the city may have been used in the Woodvale shooting incident.

Anyone with information on either of the attacks is asked to contact police at Antrim Road PSNI station on tel. 028 9065 0222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

It is not known if the two attacks are linked, but following the shootings there have been appeals for calm.

There has been speculation by local politicians that the shooting may have been a result of tension between loyalist factions.

There has been a recent escalation in disturbances attributed to increased friction between loyalist paramiltary groupings the UVF and LVF.
