Glentoran to face Shelbourne in Champions League qualifier

Irish league champions Glentoran have been paired against League of Ireland winners Shelbourne in the first qualifying round of the Champions League.

While Roy Coyle’s part-time side will be up against full-time opposition following Friday’s draw, they will feel they have every chance of making the second qualifying round after Shelbourne recently lost the All-Ireland Sentanta Cup final to Linfield, who were pipped to the Irish League title by the Glens.

However, Shelbourne will be a tough nut to crack having narrowly missed out on the Champions League group stages last year when they were narrowly beaten by Spanish giants Deportiva La Coruna.

Worryingly for security chiefs the first leg tie of this all-Ireland affair is to be played on the 12/13th July at the Oval which is the height of the 'marching season' in Northern Ireland.

The Oval was the scene of recent trouble between the home side and south Belfast rivals Linfield when hundreds of opposing supporters invaded the pitch, trading punches and launching bottles into the main stand.

Champions League winners Liverpool, meanwhile, have been drawn against Welsh champions TNS with the first leg to be played at Anfield.
