Two new PSNI officers to tackle city centre anti-social behaviour

Two new police officers dedicated to tackling anti-social behaviour in Belfast city centre will soon be on the ‘beat’, it was announced today.

Belfast's Chamber of Trade has provided almost £100,000 in funding for the officers who will be assisted in their new roles by existing police teams.

Announcing the scheme during NIO Community Safety Week, Social Development and Criminal Justice Minister David Hanson said: “The City Centre is Belfast’s ‘shop window’. People who live and work here and those who visit should feel safe while going about their business.

“This initiative is an important step to help achieve that goal. By showing that Belfast is a safe place to do business, we will convey a strong and positive message to potential investors and visitors and maximise the opportunity for economic growth.

PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Duncan McCausland said: “This initiative is part of an integrated approach to address all forms of anti-social behaviour in Belfast City Centre. The dedicated police officers will help achieve this by providing enhanced levels of visible and accessible policing.”

The pilot scheme, which begins immediately, will run for 12 months.
