UU research group predicts further Asian earthquake
A University of Ulster research group which correctly predicted an earthquake in the same region as the Boxing Say tsunami tragedy, has said a further quake in the area could again occur.
Stress changes due to the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of 26 December 2004 triggered the 28 March 8.7 scale earthquake, and according to new research findings by scientists at the University, and the Seismology Laboratory of the California Institute of Technology, such stresses have significantly increased the risk of further large earthquakes to the south along the Sunda Trench – and on the island of Sumatra.
“In the case of both the Sunda Trench subduction zone and the Sumatra fault, which runs along the centre of the island of Sumatra to the city of Banda Aceh, it would appear that the previous earthquakes in this sequence have significantly increased stresses on areas which have not experienced earthquakes in the recent past,” Professor John McCloskey from the University of Ulster said.
“Just as in the case of the stress from the Boxing Day earthquake and its triggering of the 28th March earthquake, we have significant concerns that these increase in stresses could result in further earthquake activity in the near future in this area.”
The findings of the new survey were published in science journal Nature.
A tsumani alert was triggered this week when an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter Scale occured in the Californian coastal region west of Crescent City.
Earlier this week two other quakes occured along the western americas. Eight people were killed when a quake measuring 7.9 struck Chile and a 6.8 quake hit the isolated Rat Islands off Alaska.
