PSNI Chief Constable receives knighthood

PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde has received a knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Commenting on his award, Mr Orde, who took up his post as Chief Constable in September 2002, has been a police officer for 28 years, said: “I see this as an honour not just for myself but for the whole of the Police Service.

"I believe it is a recognition of the changes which have taken place in policing in Northern Ireland, building on the foundations of the past but also looking with enthusiasm and optimism to the future.”

Six other serving and former members of the Police Service were also honoured in the List including deputy chief constable Paul Leighton who was awarded the Queen's Police Medal.

Chief Superintendent Julie Lindsay-White, who heads the Service's Internal Investigation Branch, gets the MBE while retired officer ex-Detective Chief Inspector William McAuley, of the Child Abuse and Rape Enquiry team, gets an MBE for services to child protection.

In all, there were 54 recipients from across Northern Ireland in the Honours List.

Former PSNI Deputy Chief Constable loses cancer battle
PSNI Deputy Chief Constable Colin Cramphorn has lost his battle with cancer. Mr Cramphorn, 50, was acting Chief Constable of the PSNI prior to being appointed as Chief Constable of West Yorkshire. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2004.

PSNI welcome Assistant Chief Constable appointments
The Police Service of Northern Ireland has welcomed the recent announcement by the Policing Board of the appointment of two new Assistant Chief Constables. They are Chief Superintendent Duncan McCausland and Chief Superintendent Roy Toner, both current serving officers with PSNI.

NI's Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon is urging the Finance Minister to bring forward funding options to help with the current crisis in hospital waiting lists. The SDLP Minister is to propose that the Finance Minister bring forward options for funding a response to the current hospital waiting list crisis.

Call For Urgent Meeting To Address Waiting List Crisis
The SDLP is calling for an urgent meeting with the Finance and Health Ministers after further details of the extent of the waiting list crisis have been published. MLAs Cara Hunter and Matthew O'Toole said that this is the biggest crisis facing people in Northern Ireland and it must be the most urgent priority for political leaders.
