Minister expresses sympathy to family of water plant victim
Regional Development Minister Shaun Woodward has offered his sympathy to the families of those affected by yesterday’s gas explosion at the Carmoney Water Treatment Works in Londonderry.
Drew Stevenson, 51, from Killen, near Castlederg, died in the gas explosion at the plant in Eglinton on Thursday. Two fellow workers were also injured in the explosion however their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
The Minister said: "I have been kept abreast of developments since yesterday morning and have asked to be kept fully informed about the condition of the injured workers involved.
“I wish to express my heartfelt sympathy for the families of those involved in this incident. Water Service’s Emergency Plan was implemented and they worked fully with all the Emergency Services on site.
"Water Service is liaising closely with the Health and Safety Executive, who will conduct a full investigation into the incident."
Ulster Unionist East Londonderry assembly member, David McClarty, also expressed his sympathy to the victims of the explosion.
"This was a very serious incident demanding a prompt and comprehensive response from the emergency services. They are to be commended for their professionalism in dealing with the situation,” he said.
The government said it was "confident" that a fatal explosion such as the one on Thursday would not happen again and that there had been a thorough assessment of 19 similar plants across the province.

It will be the largest Water Treatment Works to be constructed in Northern Ireland and will treat 155 million litres of water per day, supplied from the Silent Valley in the Mournes.

Water Service moves to prevent cryptosporidium contamination
DRD Water Service has made substantial progress in implementing a series of recommendations designed to prevent a repeat outbreak of cryptosporidium in the public water supply. The measures were outlined in a recently published report into the cryptosporidium contamination that occurred at Dunore Point water supply earlier this year.
