German police to liase with PSNI for football match

German police are to arrive in Northern Ireland to work alongside the PSNI ahead of this weekend’s football friendly at Windsor Park.

The officers are to operate as ‘spotters’ in the event that there is any disorder real or anticipated, on the part of German fans, for the Northern Ireland versus Germany fixture.

South Belfast police said they were also working in partnership with a number of local agencies to ensure that the event passes off safely.

Superintendent Ken Eccles, Operations Manager in South Belfast said he was confident that the cooperation of German police officers would help ensure that the match was a safe and enjoyable event for supporters.

"Whilst this is a 'friendly' match, it nevertheless remains an important event for both countries and their fans,” Superintendent Eccles said. “We hope that all fans will enjoy the game and the operational police strategy for the game will reflect this hope. That said, I wish to send a clear message to anyone attending the game that hooliganism or misconduct of that nature will not be tolerated and police resources will be available to firmly deal with such behaviour."

A capacity crowd of 14,000 is expected for Saturday’ game with around 1,500 supporters from Germany travelling to the game which kicks off at 7.30pm.
