Explosion at water plant kills one person
One person has died and two were seriously injured in an explosion at a water treatment plant in Co Londonderry.
The blast, which occurred at the Carmoney treatment works in Eglinton at around 10.30am on Thursday, is being described as an "industrial accident" by police.
A major incident was declared in the area over fears that chemical fumes may have escaped. Residents in the Eglinton and Campsie area being advised to stay indoors.
Sinn Féin MLA Mitchel McLaughlin said there must be a full and open inquiry into the accident.
"I am calling for an immediate inquiry to be set up to find out the causes
of this tragic accident and to look at the overall safety of the treatment
works so that we do have a reoccurrence of the events of this morning,” he said.
Police are advising traffic to stay clear of the area and have closed roads in and around the Clooney Road area during the emergency.

Regional Development Minister, Peter Robinson has outlined plans to invest almost £100 million on upgrading the province's water and sewerage infrastructure. The Minister was speaking on Friday, June 28, at the opening of the new Derg Water Treatment Works near Castlederg, which was constructed at a cost of £10.3 million.

Water Service to invest £47 million in Coleraine area
The Water Service has announced plans to start work on £47 million worth of projects in the Coleraine area over the next three years. The investment will see work carried out on the £42 million North Coast Wastewater Treatment Works, which will treat wastewater from Castlerock, Coleraine, Portrush and Portstewart.

'Serious' Car Accident In Lisburn
Emergency services are at the scene of a "serious" one-vehicle collision in Lisburn. The accident happened shortly before midday. It is understood a tree fell and hit a van during stormy weather. The Hillsborough Road has been closed to traffic. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
