Mother-of-six jailed after breaking sons ribs
A mother-of-six has been jailed for eight months after pleading guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and wilful neglect on her 11-month old son.
The 32-year-old Belfast woman, who cannot be identified to protect her son, appeared before Belfast Crown Court on Friday accused of shaking her baby so hard she broke nine of his ribs.
The Court heard how the woman took her son to hospital in January 2004 and initially told doctors that he had fallen off the sofa.
A prosecution lawyer said doctors did not accept that his injuries had been caused accidentally. The woman later confessed to shaking the child after losing her temper.
The accused, who is again pregnant, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and wilful neglect of her child between 1 December 2003 and 8 January 2004.
