Police launch murder inquiry in south Belfast

Police have launched a murder inquiry following the death of a US woman in the university area of south Belfast at the weekend.

The 29-year-old victim, who is understood to have been staying at a hostel just off the Lisburn Road, died after sustaining a head injury in the Fitzwilliam Street area at around 7pm on Sunday.

South Belfast Sinn Féin Assembly member Alex Maskey said local

people were shocked at the news. “The exact details of what happened last night are not yet clear," Mr Maskey said. “ Local people are shocked at this incident and I would wish to offer my condolences to the family of the young woman who has tragically lost her life."

One woman has been arrested in relation to the incident, however there are no further details at present.

Elsewhere, the body of a man has been recovered from the water near Warrenpoint in Co Down.

It is understood that the man ran off and jumped into Carlingford Lough after a car was stopped by police on the Warrenpoint Road at around 5am.

His body was later found washed up on a nearby shoreline.

The police ombudsman has been asked to investigate the incident.

Man arrested after drugs find
Police seized a large quantity of Class A drugs, following a planned search at a premises in south Belfast yesterday. An amount of suspected Ecstasy and cocaine, with an estimated street value of £120,000, was recovered during the raid. A 47-year-old man has been arrested and charged with possession of Class A drugs, with intent to supply.

Man Stabbed In Stomach
A man has been stabbed in the stomach by another man in south Belfast. Police said the incident occurred somewhere in the area incorporating the Donegall Road, Donegall Avenue and Tates Avenue between 17:45 and 18:15 on Thursday evening. The victim has been taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries.
