Dairy company fined over three pollution offences

Leading dairy company Dale Farm Ltd has been fined a total of £7,500 plus court costs after being convicted of three separate pollution offences in Co Tyrone.

Monday’s court was told that the first of these three incidents occurred on 30 June 2003, when discolouration of a river running past the Dunman Bridge plant in Cookstown was traced by DOE Environment and Heritage Service staff to a polluting discharge from the plant.

A week later, on 6 July, some 0.5km of the important spawning river for trout and salmon was again found to be seriously discoloured and affected. The source was again traced to Dale Farm's Dunman Bridge plant.

On 11 September the same year, a third instance of pollution, affecting 1km of the river, was traced to the same plant. Analysis of samples taken during the investigation of each of the three pollution incidents showed that all were highly polluting.

Resident magistrate, Mrs Watters, imposed a fine of £2,500 on each of the three offences.

There have been 11 previous successful convictions for pollution offences occurring at the Dunman Bridge plant.
