Lord Mayor looks forward to end of year show
The 2005 Lord Mayor’s Show – the showpiece which traditionally marks the end of the First Citizen’s term of office – is to take place in just over a week’s time.
The creations of Belfast’s most famous author will be celebrated when the city’s biggest carnival procession – the 49th annual Lord Mayor’s Show meanders around city centre on Saturday May 21.
The theme of this year’s Show is ‘The Tales of Narnia’, with more than 1,000 participants expected to recreate the colourful characters and stories from C.S. Lewis’ books, still so popular with children and adults alike half a century after they were first published.
The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tom Ekin, sees the event as an opportunity to unlock the city’s creative potential. He said: “Over the last two years, the Lord Mayor’s Show has changed, with considerable Council input into the event.
“This year, it will have a distinctive carnival feel that will allow the creative talent of the city to be put on show for all to see. The event will celebrate C. S. Lewis as one of Belfast’s greatest authors and bring his literary creations to the life in Lewis’ home city.”
The Lord Mayor’s Show once again will follow a circular route between Cathedral Quarter and the City Hall, through the heart of Belfast. The parade will leave Writer’s Square, opposite St. Anne’s Cathedral, at 1pm and move along Royal Avenue and Donegall Place to the City Hall. It then will do a lap of City Hall before returning to Writer’s Square.
