Health care project celebrated
The success of a year-long initiative for healthcare staff aimed at improving patients’ experiences by concentrating on areas such as hygiene and dignity was highlighted at a conference in Antrim today.
The ‘Essence of Care’ project, encourages staff working in areas such as hospitals and nursing homes to focus on aspects of care that are important to patients. These include issues such as hygiene, privacy, dignity, continence care and dietary requirements.
Speaking at the event, Francis Rice, acting Chief Nursing Officer at the DHSSPS, commented: “The ‘Essence of Care’ project involved staff working in 16 Trusts, four Nursing Homes, Northern Ireland Prison Service and Marie Curie. Over the last year they have been striving to help patients by focusing on areas which matter to the patient.
“The project has refocused minds on care and on the importance of user and carer involvement. It has enhanced the team approach to care, encouraging the sharing of best practice. The challenge now is to ensure that the principles in ‘Essence of Care’ become embedded in practice.”
‘Essence of Care’ is a toolkit of nine benchmarks, identified by over 2000 patients, carers, professionals and users groups in England.
The project has been testing the applicability of the benchmarks for the NI context.
