Firefighters attacked in west Belfast
Police are appealing for information after firefighters were attacked by children throwing stones on the outskirts of west Belfast on Monday.
The incident occurred shortly after fire crews arrived at the Poleglass estate to deal with a vehicle which had been set on fire.
Although no one was injured during the disturbance, John Langtree, of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, said such attacks seemed to be increasing.
"We really want to get the message out to the community, to the children and to the parents just to say 'you have to stop this'," Mr Langtree said.
He added he was concerned by the trend in such attacks.
Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives on 028 9065 0222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
In Scotland this week new laws came into force designed to help protect emergency services from attacks. Under the Emergency Workers (Scotland) Act it will be an offence to hinder emergency service workers. The legislation covers not only the fire service, but police, ambulance, and many other workers engaged in emergency call outs such as lifeboat crews, coastguards and social workers.
The legislation includes penalties of up to nine months imprisonment and a £5,000 fine.
