Modern apprentice of the year sought
A search to find Northern Ireland’s best Modern Apprentice has been launched in Belfast today.
The competition, which is aimed at young people currently in training under the Department for Employment and Learning’s Jobskills Modern Apprenticeship programme, recognises apprentices who have demonstrated exceptional progress in areas such as practical and theoretical ability as well as personal achievement and commitment.
Speaking at the launch, Will Haire, Permanent Secretary at the Department, said: "This competition will provide official recognition for the cream of our Modern Apprentices. The training programme was introduced in 1996 to help Northern Ireland develop a world class workforce to meet the business challenges of the 21st century.
“The programme has proved immensely popular with young people and provides them with the knowledge, skills, understanding and competence required to work at a relatively high level within their chosen industry."
Such is the success of the programme that intake has almost doubled over the past three years and more than 2,000 local employers are now participating and reaping the benefits of employing Modern Apprentices in their businesses.
Around 80 organisations are involved in the delivery of Modern Apprenticeships throughout Northern Ireland.

AN 18 year old retail trainee from Newcastle has won the province’s first ever Modern Apprentice of the Year Award. During a presentation ceremony held in the Culloden Hotel, Daniel Doran was presented with a trophy, a commemorative plaque and a multi-media PC sponsored by Sx3.

Fermanagh man is Modern Apprentice of 2002
A young man from County Fermanagh has been named as the 2002 Modern Apprentice of the Year. Engineering trainee, 20-year-old Gordon Wiggins from Roslea in County Fermanagh, received his award from the Minister for Employment and Learning, at an awards ceremony held recently in Belfast.
