Jobs to go at potato processing plant
Around 20 jobs are to go at a Co Antrim potato processing plant, it was confirmed on Thursday.
Ballymoney Foods said its business was being undermined by imports of cheaper chips from the Netherlands and Belgium and that the jobs would be lost as it tried to cut costs and stabilise its frozen chip production business.
Last year the company’s factory had been saved from closure when a growers consortium bought it for a reported £2.75 million.
However, the firm has been unable to meet a sales target of 300 tonnes per week which was set by the group of 60 potato growers from Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic who took over the business last year.
Management at the company said weekly sales were currently running at less than 200 tonnes.

Industry group set up to advise on seed potato interests
Agriculture Minister, Ian Pearson today announced the Government’s launch of a Seed Potato Liaison Group (SPLG) to act as an advisory body on behalf of seed potato growers and merchants. The announcement brings to a conclusion the long-running review of the sector following the demise of Seed Potato Promotions Ltd in 2002.

A farmer's co-operative that supplies fresh-off-the-farm 'spuds' is to close, with the loss of 16 jobs. Fane Valley Co-operative Society Ltd, a potato packing business in north Antrim - which is owned by 2,000 farmer shareholders - said it was no longer feasible to retain its Dervock packing plant. It will close in early April.

NIBSP could help create 13,000 new jobs say PwC
Over 13,000 jobs could be created over the next four years if the Northern Ireland Business Start Programme (NIBSP) continues at its current rate of business creation. This is according to the findings of research recently carried out by management consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as part of their ongoing evaluation of the programme.
