‘Success or failure’ of peace process hinges on elections

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has said Thursday’s elections is about the peace process and its “success or failure”.

Mr Adams was speaking at his party’s final press conference of the Westminster election campaign on Wednesday where he was joined by party colleagues Caitriona Ruane, Alex Maskey and Gerry Kelly.

Mr Adams said: "This is a crucially important election. It is about the future - the type of Ireland the electorate want. It is about the peace process and its success or failure. And it's about leadership.

"I believe the way forward that I have mapped out provides a real opportunity to revive the peace process.”

Meanwhile, the Alliance Party has claimed that managing Northern Ireland’s divided society is costing £1 billion in public expenditure.

Speaking outside the gates of Stormont on Tuesday, party leader David Ford described the figure as “a financial scandal”.

"£1 billion of public money is wasted in this society every year in managing a divided society - the costs of segregation,” Mr Ford said.

"We are here to give it back, and show that difficult choices always have to be made with scarce resources.

"Northern Ireland is suffering because at present we are not spending our money well. Northern Ireland can do much better.”
