Cancer figures released as new charity forms
Two children are diagnosed with cancer every week in Northern Ireland, a new charity has revealed.
The figures were released as a new charity, CLIC Sargent, was formed following the merger of CLIC and Sargent Cancer Care for Children.
David Ellis, Chief Executive of CLIC Sargent, said: “Over 70% of children now survive cancer, but in doing so face harsh and rigorous treatment.
”Quite apart from the emotional trauma of the illness, children have to cope with a severe treatment programme and often many ongoing health problems through the rest of their lives.”
On the day the new charity was launched the new survey also revealed that seven out of ten people underestimate the number of years of harsh and protracted treatment that children with cancer can face.
The same percentage of people are also unaware that cancer is the number one killer disease of children in the UK.
Mr Ellis said CLIC Sargent aimed to further improve the level of care and support to children with cancer and ensure greater strategic planning of future services.
