Dutch MRSA expert to address Queen’s conference
A leading Dutch infection control expert will visit Queen's University next week to discuss MRSA prevention.
Dr Margreet Vos, who is head of the infection control department in Rotterdam's Erasmus University Medical Centre, will discuss various strategies used in the Netherlands to prevent the hospital acquired infection.
The Netherlands has had major success in keeping MRSA out of hospitals and the Erasmus University Medical Centre is at the forefront of developing effective strategies for preventing the spread of the infection.
In her lecture on Thursday April 28 Dr Vos will highlight the "search and destroy" method, which features the early detection, early identification and early containment of infection and involves patients, healthcare workers and the healthcare environment.
The lecture is organised by School of Pharmacy at Queen's and the Microbiology Department of the United Hospitals Trust, under the auspices of the Infectious Disease Recognised Research Group. It will be held in the North Lecture Theatre, Medical Biology Centre, and begins at 1pm.

TB Cases Increase In NI
The number of people suffering with Tuberculosis has risen in Northern Ireland. The Public Health Agency (PHA) has released the latest figures which show that in 2014 in Northern Ireland there were 97 cases of TB reported, which is a significant increase from the previous year when 74 cases were reported.

QUB awarded 'Technology for Teaching' grant
The School of Computer Science at Queen's University has been awarded a prestigious 2004 Hewlett Packard 'Technology for Teaching' grant. A total of seven grants were awarded to European universities, with Queen's the only UK university selected.

Teens Among Irish Road Tragedies
Three people have died in two separate road accidents in Co Cork in just 24 hours. The news came as the name of the victim of a road accident on the main road between Ballymena and Ballymoney was being released today. Julia Kerr, 32, originally from Scotland, died in a collision involving a lorry and a car.

Victims Of Cork Disaster Named
All those killed in yesterday's fatal plane crash in Cork have now been identified. A cousin of the President of the Irish Republic, Mary McAleese's husband was among the six people confirmed dead in Thursday's airplane crash in Cork.

Patients And Staff Tested For Bacterial Infection at Altnagelvin Hospital
A number of staff members and patients at Altnagelvin Hospital in L'Derry are being tested and treated for the bacterial infection Streptococcus Group A. A spokesperson for the Western Trust, said: "Commonly the Streptococcus Group A symptoms are sore throats and minor skin conditions.
