'SID' is on the look out for speeding motorists, say police
Motorists are to be reminded of their speed by a number of new roadside monitors, introduced in Belfast on Thursday.
Police in the Greater Belfast area have just taken delivery of 24 new Speed Indication Displays, known as SIDs, which tracks drivers from 100m away and beams up their speed on a roadside board.
Motorists caught going over the speed limit will not be fined, but police hope SID will act as a deterrent and make drivers think twice before speeding again. Trailer versions of this device have been used before but police are hoping that the new smaller versions, which can be used more easily in urban areas, will help reduce incidents of speeding in built up areas.
Chief Inspector Mark Purdon, Road Policing, Urban Region, said: "The introduction of the Speed Indication Displays should act as a deterrent to those drivers who continue to ignore the speed limits, especially in urban areas.
“We will be using these devices to remind drivers to watch their speed and will look at placing them in areas that see a lot of pedestrian traffic such as schools, shopping centres or built up areas.”
Police also announced further road safety operations in the Greater Belfast area in the coming days, targeting careless driving, particularly drivers who use their mobile phones while behind the wheel.

Further Roll Out Of 20mph School Speed Limit Schemes
The second phase of the part-time 20mph speed limit schemes at 106 schools across Northern Ireland has been rolled out, Infrastructure Minister, Nichola Mallon has announced. This takes the total number of schools benefiting from this new road safety scheme introduced by Minister Mallon to 209.

DfI And Emergency Services Launch Road Safety Initiative
The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has partnered with Northern Ireland's emergency services for new road safety campaign, urging drivers to "slow down to save lives". Figures reveal that 310 people have been killed or seriously injured on our roads because of speeding in the past five years (2018-2022).

109 NI Drivers Clocked At 100mph Last Year
The PSNI detected more than 100 motorists speeding at over 100mph last year. The speeding figures, released by road safety charity Brake, show that 109 drivers were clocked driving in excess of 100mph, compared to 86 in 2017.
