'Positive line of enquiry’ found in 80s murder case
Police have confirmed they are following a “positive line of enquiry” into the death of a German tourist over 17 years ago.
Inga Maria Hauser was found buried in a shallow grave in a forest near Ballycastle on 21 April 1988 with a broken neck.
Although police have had their suspicions about the identity of the killer, it wasn’t until recently that a caller contacted them confirming many of those suspicions.
Detective Superintendent Pat Steele said the caller may have phoned Ballycastle police station but that this call was terminated in Ballymoney, where the person spoke to an officer and left a message.
"The message which they left seemed to confirm many of our suspicions with regard to the identity of Inga's killer," Mr Steele said.
"However, the caller wasn't able to speak directly to a detective and I'd be most anxious that we could speak to that caller again."
Ms Hauser, who was 18 and from Munich, had travelled to meet with a friend in Cardiff, but decided to go to Scotland and Northern Ireland while in Britain.
Following a “root and branch“ investigation over the past couple of years detectives have been able to ascertain that Ms Hauser, who was last seen alive on the Stranraer to Larne ferry on April 6 1988, had died much sooner than they had thought.

Security Alert Finds Nothing At MLA's Home
A security alert at the North Antrim home of Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has ended without incident. Police were called to the home following a report that a bomb had been left at the house. It is understood an anonymous caller telephoned the MLA's office in Dunloy claiming that an explosive device had been planted.

Army Remove Device In Banbridge GAA Alert
A 'viable' pipe bomb has been found at a GAA ground in County Down. The bomb was found during an overnight alert at the ground on the Ballela Road outside Banbridge. Police have since described the device as "viable" and it has now been removed by the Army Technical Officers.

Police launch murder inquiry in Larne
Police have launched a murder inquiry after the body of a 37-year-old woman was found in Larne. Officers were called to a house at Recreation Road at around 10.30am on Friday where they discovered the body, which is understood to have had chest wounds.

Police investigate bogus caller robbery
Police are investigating a robbery in the Hillsborough Drive area of east Belfast. A male called at a house shortly after 5pm on Wednesday evening, claiming to be from the Housing Executive. The man, who was not carrying identification, said a letter would have been previously sent to notify the homeowner of the visit.

Two Men Arrested Over Attempted Murder Of Off-Duty Police Officer
Two men have been arrested in connection with the attempted murder of an off duty police officer in L'Derry. A viable under car bomb was found outside the house of the officer in the Ardanlee area on 22 February. The suspects are aged 43 and 59.
