McCartney sister threatened in Short Strand

A sister of murdered Belfast man Robert McCartney has claimed she was threatened at her home in the Short Strand area of the city.

Paula McCartney said a woman told her she would be put out of the area and also that her family had to stop handing out leaflets about a vigil in Robert’s memory when they were confronted by about a dozen people.

Sisters Paula, Gemma, Donna and Clare McCartney, along with Mr McCartney’s fiancé Bridgeen Hagans, were distributing leaflets seeking support for a vigil outside Magennis's bar in Belfast where Robert was murdered.

Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster on Thursday, Sinn Fein councillor Joe O'Donnell said he was aware "an altercation had taken place in the area while the McCartney family were distributing leaflets". However the former Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast also said that “other residents claimed they had been the victim of threats and abusive language by some members of the McCartney family”.

Ms McCartney said police had been informed of the incident and described the scene as “very threatening”.

Robert McCartney was stabbed after a row in Magennis's bar on January 30. The family have since blamed the IRA for the murder.
