McGuinness to meet Reiss on US trip

Sinn Féin MP for Mid-Ulster Martin McGuinness is to meet US Special Envoy Mitchell Reiss during a two day visit to the United States.

Mr McGuinness left for the US on Tuesday and is expected to meet Mr Reiss on Wednesday followed by meetings with a number US Congress members.

Mr McGuinness said he would be keeping the US updated on last week's call from Gerry Adams for the IRA to revert to “purely political and democratic activity”.

On Monday, Mr Adams said that last week’s appeal to the IRA meant that there could be no excuse for the current stalled peace process to remain in stagnation.

The West Belfast MP said that while the process of internal consultation within the IRA was the crucial one he was “calling upon all republicans and nationalists and others to debate the future direction of our struggle”.
