Lottery cash boost gets NI communities active
People in some of Northern Ireland’s most disadvantaged communities are set to get more healthy and active thanks to a cash windfall from the Big Lottery Fund.
The largest of the National Lottery Good Cause distributors today announced grants totalling £32,482 under the Active Lifestyles programme to fund innovative physical activities to boost the health of people across Northern Ireland.
In all 35 projects have been awarded funding for various activities including break-dancing classes for teenagers and sessions for older people in Armagh to learn the lost art of butter-churning.
Big Lottery Fund Northern Ireland Board Member Dr Sam Burnside welcomed the announcement: “I am delighted that the Big Lottery Fund has developed the Active Lifestyles programme as I believe that the awards announced today will make a significant difference to the health and well-being of many people across Northern Ireland.
“This programme has adopted an innovative and holistic view of active lifestyles and I hope that it stimulates new and creative approaches to increasing the quality of life of people living in the most disadvantaged communities.”
The Active Lifestyles programme aims to encourage innovative community projects to be developed across Northern Ireland.
These could include finding new ways of attracting older people and people with disabilities to take part in physical activity, supporting family activities and encouraging local people to train as physical activity coaches.
