Lottery grants boost anti-racism projects

Over £1.5 million has been awarded to 16 projects across Northern Ireland that are helping to tackle the growing problem of racism in the province.

One of the projects awarded funding was the Multi Cultural Resource Centre which secured a grant of £247,240 to develop the Community Partnership and Advocacy Project to tackle racism and discrimination in Belfast.

The lottery cash will be used to provide support and office accommodation for black and ethnic minority community organisations and outreach to vulnerable individuals and families.

Breidge Gadd, the Big Lottery Fund’s NI Board Member said: “We are proud to be able to support these organisations in their vital work in Northern Ireland. The Big Lottery Fund delivers grants that make a difference to the most disadvantaged in our society. These awards are an example of just how important lottery funding is to local people.”

The importance of these latest grants were highlighted at the weekend when an asian man was treated for cuts to his head and eye, a mouth injury and bruising to his body following what was described as a racist attack in south Belfast.

SDLP assembly member Carmel Hanna said the attack as "despicable".
