Universities to hold Holyland meeting with SDLP

Northern Ireland’s two universities are to hold a meeting with the SDLP to discuss ongoing community relation issues in the Holyland area of south Belfast.

The meeting comes a week after disturbances and a number of arrests in the area following St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Belfast.

Community Relations officer at the University of Ulster, Professor Peter Roebuck said: “The University welcomes the interest of all political parties and feels that they have an important role to play in the area, working with the University as partners to develop good relationships between students and permanent residents.

“Side-by-side with positive and creative projects on the ground we do not hesitate to deploy the full range of our disciplinary measures when students are found guilty of anti-social behaviour.”

Eighteen people were arrested for “disorderly behaviour” following last Thursday’s trouble.

Despite appeals by Northern Ireland's two universities for students to behave themselves in the run up to St Patrick’s Day, people lined the streets drinking and partying into the early hours in what one local resident described as like scenes from a “circus”.
