Belfast prepares to honour ‘Titanic’ achievement

Just over nine decades after the world’s most famous ocean liner sailed gracefully off for her tragic maiden trans-Atlantic voyage, the City of Belfast once more is preparing to celebrate and commemorate Titanic.

The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tom Ekin this morning visited the site of the city’s first shipyard to announce details of Belfast City Council’s fourth annual ‘Titanic - Made In Belfast’ programme of events.

A wealth of activities have been organised, by Belfast City Council, over the week of March 26 - April 2, including talks and storytelling, walking, bus and boat tours, dramatic re-enactments, music and special exhibitions.

“The Titanic story is probably one of the most fascinating, amazing, poignant, thought provoking and absorbing tales from the last century, if not the last millennium,” the Lord Mayor said at today’s launch.

“Over the past few years, the city that gave birth to the ship, and many others, finally and rightfully acknowledged her part in the tale, and Belfast City Council once again is proud to celebrate the achievement, commemorate the tragedy and educate the world about our city’s role in the Titanic story,” the Lord Mayor said.

The week of events begins on Saturday March 26 when the ‘Titanic At Home’ exhibition is officially opened by the Lord Mayor and John Parkinson, President of the Belfast Titanic Society, who, as a small boy, saw the magnificent liner leave the Port of Belfast in 1912.
