Police crackdown on underage drinkers
Police in North Belfast have seized over 200 bottles and cans of alcohol following a two-day operation aimed at tackling under-age drinking in the area.
The operation, which took place on Friday and Saturday evening (18 and 19 February), saw two people reported to the Youth Diversion Officer for alcohol related offences.
“Last weekend’s under-age drinking initiative is part of on-going police efforts to tackle drinking by young people,” said Inspector Tommy Mahood, Sector Inspector for the Antrim Road area.
“Over the weekend various bottles and cans of alcohol including alcopops, spirits, beer and cider were seized by police. We are delighted with the result but would stress that this is not an issue which police can tackle on their own.”
Inspector Mahood stressed that local licensees and off licence proprietors also needed to play their part in tackling the problem.
He concluded: “We would ask members of the licensed trade to ensure alcohol is not sold to any person under 18 years of age or to any individual who they suspect is buying alcohol on behalf of or to pass on to young people.
“When young people are involved in under-age drinking they run a greater risk of becoming involved in accidents; assaults or getting caught up in other criminality.”
