PSNI and Garda Síochána take part in Torch Run
Members of the PSNI and Garda Síochána were quick off the blocks today for the start of the 2005 Law Enforcement Torch Run.
The Run, in which 38 members of the PSNI and Garda Síochána are participating, aims to create awareness about Special Olympics Ireland and the physical, social and emotional benefits of participation in the Programme for people with a learning disability.
Speaking at the starting line of the Torch Run, Assistant Chief Constable of the PSNI Duncan McCausland said: “The Police Service of Northern Ireland are proud to support the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run with our colleagues from An Garda Síochána.
“I'm particularly pleased that the runners are drawn from student officers who, as they begin their policing careers, should embrace the same inclusive attitude, and the same commitment to working in partnership as the Special Olympic athletes we are supporting through the Law Enforcement Torch Run.”
Special Olympics Ireland Patron Gerry Kelly and rugby international David Humphries also lent their support to the Run which aims to increase awareness of the team of eight athletes and five coaches participating in the Alpine Skiing event of the 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games later this month.
The Torch Run first took place in 1989 when members of the Garda Síochána undertook the project.
