Minister confirms classroom spend for 2005/06
The Government has confirmed that an extra £79 million is to be pumped into local classrooms next year.
Announcing details of a financial settlement for schools and Education & Library Boards for 2005/06, Education Minister Barry Gardiner said that funding for schools will increase by over 9% next year.
“I believe this funding settlement provides further evidence of this Government’s commitment to the delivery of an education service designed to raise standards of achievement and allow all children to reach their full potential,” the Minister said.
Turning to allocations for Education and Library Boards for the 2005/06 financial year, Mr Gardiner acknowledged the challenges that faced the education sector: “I am increasing the level of allocation to ELB centre budgets by almost 6% – from £333 million to £352 million. This will provide an extra £19 million to support the core services delivered by Education and Library Boards.”
Last December, Mr Gardiner rejected claims that education funding was in crisis despite shortfalls within the five local Education Boards being forecast to exceed £100 million in the next two to three years.
Mr Gardiner was responding to reports on financial pressures facing the Education and Library Boards in Northern Ireland over the past year.

News that 15 expressions of interest have been lodged with the Department under the Shared Education Campuses Programme has been welcomed by Education Minister John O'Dowd. The Minister launched the Shared Education Campuses Programme in January, with a deadline of 31 March for receipt for expressions of interest.
