£2.5m cash boost for languages at UU
The University of Ulster today revealed it is to receive a £2.5 million cash boost for teaching and learning.
The cash injection will fund new developments in the teaching of Irish and French and in online learning and will help the University invest in the development of new resources and software.
The awards, which run until the end of 2009, come from the Department of Employment and Learning and include £1.67 million for enhanced online learning services and £825,000 for a centre of excellence in the teaching and learning of Irish and French.
Professor John Gillespie, Head of the School of Languages and Literature, said: “We are a UK leader in the field of innovative teaching of languages. We are delighted at this recognition of the skill and expertise we have here at UU.”
Last month the University gained more than £3 million in funding and research awards for 34 projects across many of its disciplines.

Open Learning Centre badged for MOUS success
Advanced Learning Systems has announced that the company has received the Microsoft seal of approval by becoming a recognised testing centre for Microsoft Office courseware and examinations. Joanne Bayliss, Manager of Advanced Learning Systems, said she was delighted on becoming a MOUS approved testing centre.

Launch of drive to spread excellence in higher education
An initiative was launched today to promote excellence across all aspects of teaching and learning in Northern Ireland Higher Education. The regional Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning programme (CETLs NI) was unveiled by Employment and Learning Minister, Angela Smith, at Parliament Buildings on Wednesday.
