Police make fresh appeal in murder inquiry

Police have re-appealed for information following the murder of a man in Belfast city centre last week.

Robert McCartney, 33, from Mountpottinger Road in east Belfast, died from stab wounds following what police described as a “pub fight” at around 11pm on Sunday January 30.

He was found unconscious in nearby Cromac Street suffering from a stab wound to the stomach and died later in hospital.

Yesterday, officers revisited the scene and spoke to members of the public and motorists, and handed out leaflets in a bid to jog the memory of anyone who may have been there at the time.

Last Tuesday street violence flared in the mainly nationalist Markets area of the city as police investigated the murder with officers attacked with bricks, bottles and stones.

South Belfast Sinn Féin Assembly member Alex Maskey reacted furiously to the searches describing them as “heavy handed”.

However, Ulster Unionist MLA for East Belfast Sir Reg Empey said republicans had orchestrated the disturbances in an attempt to “move the focus from the crime to police action”.
