Over 650 people caught speeding in police clampdown
Over 650 people have been caught speeding on Northern Ireland's roads since November, police figures have revealed today.
For the period November 5, 2004 to mid-January 2005, 652 drivers were detected speeding, 188 were driving carelessly and 267 drivers were detected for offence relating to seatbelts.
Chief Inspector Mark Purdon, Head of Urban Region Roads Policing Unit, said today’s figures indicated a commitment by police service to tackle the issue of road safety.
“Speed accounts for a quarter of all road deaths and is also a major cause of serious injuries,” Chief Inspector Purdon said. “Already this year 12 people have lost their lives on our roads. I sincerely hope that no further lives will be lost. Unfortunately, past experience tells us this will not be the case.
“It continues to amaze and sadden police officers that some motorists persist in disregarding the basic rules of road safety. All drivers have a responsibility not only for their own safety, but the safety of other road users. It is important that this message gets through.”
It was also revealed that 25 drivers are to be prosecuted in relation to dangerous driving offences.

A record £80 million will be spent on structural roads maintenance this year across Northern Ireland. The figure was revealed by Deputy Divisional Roads Manager, Tom McCourt as he presented DRD Roads Service’s autumn report to Newtownabbey Borough Council.
