Manufacturing matters to City’s wellbeing’ says Council
Major new research has revealed that Belfast’s previously beleaguered manufacturing sector has been experiencing growth in hi-tech, value-added small companies – businesses which are crucial to the long term success of the city.
According to Councillor Chris McGimpsey, Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Economic Development Sub-Committee, Belfast’s manufacturing industry is emerging from a period of decline and in fact could be on the verge of a manufacturing renaissance – with the sector now more diverse and competitive than at any other time in recent economic history.
“Although evidence has shown that the manufacturing sector has experienced a continual spiral of decline over the past 30 years, it is important to recognize that manufacturing still matters,” Councillor McGimpsey said.
“This new research clearly shows evidence of an emerging growth in high-tech value-added businesses. There is an increase in the birth of small manufacturing businesses with 252 new openings in the period 1995 to 2001, spread across a wide range of manufacturing activities.”
Mr McGimpsey revealed that since the completion of the research late last year, Belfast City Council has been consulting and sharing it with key stakeholders in the City, in order to garner a range of support and look at the way forward.
On the basis of this research and subsequent consultations, Belfast City Council is holding a major seminar, entitled ‘Manufacturing Matters’, in the City Hall on Thursday February 3.
