Two men injured in separate baseball bat attacks

Two men have been attacked in similar but separate baseball bat attacks in north Belfast.

At around 7.30pm a 36-year-old man was cycling near to Duncairn Gardens when a car pulled up alongside him. Three men wielding baseball bats got out of the car and attacked the victim before driving off towards Duncairn Gardens.

The victim is being treated in hospital for serious head injuries.

Later. in a similar incident shortly before 9pm, another 36-year-old man who had entered the driveway of his home at Waterloo Gardens off the Antrim Road was attacked by three men armed with baseball bats who had jumped out of a car. The victim was viciously beaten around the head and body. He is being treated in hospital for head injuries sustained in the attack.

In the first incident at Duncairn Gardens, police have appealed for any witnesses to the assault or who saw a car, possibly an old-style Cavalier, in the area to contact them.

In the second attack, police want to speak to anyone who may have seen the man as he walked along the Antrim Road or Waterloo Gardens, or anyone who may have seen a dark-coloured Toyota Supra car in the area.

Five Men Arrested Following Shooting Attack In Newry
Five people have been arrested after shots were fired at a house in Newry. The attack happened in the Altmore Gardens area at around 9.20pm on Monday, 26 March. A car pulled up outside the house and fired shots that caused damage to the front window. No-one was injured in the shooting.

Man And Woman Shot In West Belfast
A man and woman, aged in their 50s, have been shot in the legs in west Belfast. The attack happened at a house in Norglen Parade shortly after 6.15pm on Thursday, 12 January. The victims, understood to be husband and wife, were taken to hospital to be treated, however their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Heart Attacks Kill Six People In NI Every Week
Heart attacks kill six people in Northern Ireland every week, according to research by the British Heart Foundation (BHF). 314 people aged under 65 died from heart failure last year. In 2013/14, there were 5,400 heart attacks treated in Northern Ireland hospitals. This figure has risen from 4,600 the year before.

Men Arrested Over Graveyard Vandalism
Six men have been arrested after headstones were vandalised at a graveyard on the Drum Road in Cookstown, County Tyrone, in an attack that police have described as a "hate crime". The gravestones were scraped and sprayed with sectarian graffiti in the overnight attack.

All-Ireland Fleadh Decision Due
A decision is due over the weekend as to the location of the 2013 All-Ireland Fleadh. The decision will be revealed in Dublin on Saturday when members of the 31-strong central executive of Comhaltas cast their vote. In the running are Londonderry, Sligo and Ennis.
