HSENI appoint new chairman

The next Chairman of the Board of the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland, has been announced today.

Professor Peter McKie CBE will replace the retiring Chairman, Liam McBrinn, who steps down at the end of March.

Commenting on the appointment, Enterprise Minister Barry Gardiner said: “I am delighted that Professor McKie has agreed to accept the post of Chairman.

“I know that with his international health and safety experience, including involvement in the Ladbroke Grove Rail Inquiry, he will bring particular insight into the work of HSENI and in doing so, build on the firm foundation laid down by his predecessor, Liam McBrinn.”

Professor McKie is currently Managing Partner of PHM Associates (NI) Ltd and prior to that was Managing Director and Chairman of DuPont UK Ltd.

He also served for two years as a Board member for the Department of Education’s Qualifications and Curriculum Agency and the Quality Assurance Agency.

Hoax device left outside Larne school
Two controlled explosions have been carried out on a suspect object outside a school in Co Antrim on Wednesday morning. The device was found by a pupil outside the gates of Larne Grammar school shortly before 9am. Pupils were evacuated to a nearby church hall while the device was examined.

NIHE Chairman Appointed
Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland MLA, today announced the appointment of Donald Hoodless as Chairman and Professor Peter Roberts as Vice-Chairman to the Board of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. The Minister said: "I welcome the appointment of Mr Hoodless and Professor Roberts at this time.

Health fears over 'toxic bonfires'
A member of the local Assembly has called for tough targets for carbon emissions to be attached for funding for bonfires. Stormont Environment Committee chairman Patsy McGlone spoke amid health fears for those living close to the Ballycraigy pyre in Antrim, that toxic fumes could damage their health.

Northern Ireland Labour Relations Agency chairman appointed
The Northern Ireland Labour Relations Agency has announced Patrick McCartan as their new chairman. Mr McCartan succeeds the retiring Chairman, Professor Desmond Rea OBE, who currently presides over the 19-member Policing Board which supervises the new Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Brexit Deal On Irish Border Expected Soon
Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab has told MPs he expects a deal on the UK's exit from the EU by 21 November, and said agreement on the Irish border issue was "not far off". Officials said that concluding the negotiations by the middle of this month remained an aspiration, but that there had been no major breakthrough in recent days.
