Lottery boost for NI childcare

The Big Lottery Fund has announced grants of over £600,000 to transform vital childcare facilities at nine projects across Northern Ireland.

The lottery cash, totalling £614,486, will be used to fund a number of innovative schemes including a mobile toy and language library for Irish language nurseries in the Western Board area, a learning garden created by children in a Derry housing estate and a new family centre in west Belfast.

Breidge Gadd, Big Lottery Fund Board Member in Northern Ireland, said: “Our Building Quality Childcare Programme is funding projects that support entire families. These projects are allowing children to develop new skills while parents and carers have the chance to access training and employment.

“The projects we fund are making a huge difference to family life across the most disadvantaged and isolated communities in Northern Ireland. With the practical difficulties faced by so many families today, good quality, affordable childcare can’t be taken for granted and it is exciting to be able to support these innovative schemes.”

The grants have been awarded under the Fund’s Building Quality Childcare Programme which will invest £6 million into supporting the capital costs of projects across Northern Ireland.
