Siblings remanded over north Belfast murder

A brother and sister, Joseph Doherty (48) and Mary Doherty (41), have been remanded in custody today on charges in connection with the murder of a woman in north Belfast on Monday.

Roseanna Lonergan, the 45-year-old victim, was the man's partner. Her body was discovered at her home in Brookville Court, north Belfast, just before 7.30am on Monday, January 10.

Mr Doherty is charged with murder while his sister is accused of withholding information.

A Detective Inspector told the court Mr Doherty said, "I am very sorry for what I have done," when charged by police. The Inspector said that when charged Miss Doherty had made no reply.

The accused were remanded to appear by video link on February 9.

Woman Dies In House Fire In Co Fermanagh
A woman has died in a house fire in County Fermanagh. Emergency services were called to a bungalow at Coragh Road on Sunday, where the 54-year-old's body was recovered. It is believed the fire was started accidentally.

Complaints about botched car repairs are on the rise in Northern Ireland, according to Trading Standards. The regulatory body said that complaints about cars have increased over a thousand in a year and also claim that a third of these complaints refer to servicing work or repairs.

Priest condemns church attack
An attack on a Catholic Church in Co Tyrone has been condemned by its Parish Priest. Father Michael Doherty described the incident in which a number of windows were smashed at St Mary's Church in Strabane as "disgraceful". Police are trying to establish a motive for the incident which occurred on Wednesday night.

Three appear in court on drugs trafficking charges
Three people have appeared in Londonderry Magistrates Court after cocaine with a street value of half a million pounds was seized in County Londonderry on Monday. Two men and a woman, all faced charges relating to being involved with drugs trafficking. All three have denied the charges.

Eileen Doherty Murder: Jailed Seeks Pardon
The man who was jailed last week for the murder of a 19-year-old Catholic woman in 1973 has written to the Secretary of State to ask for a pardon. Robert Rodgers' lawyers have asked Theresa Villiers to free him under the royal prerogative of mercy. The 59-year-old will also lodge an appeal against being found guilty of the murder of Eileen Doherty.
