Jack and Katie most popular baby names in 2004
Jack and Katie were the most popular first names given to children born in Northern Ireland in 2004, it was revealed today.
Since 2000, Jack and Matthew have remained the two most popular boys’ names while Katie entered the top ten most popular names for girls in 2002, before hitting the top spot in 2004. Emma has moved down one place to become the second most popular girls’ name and Ellie has moved up from sixth place in 2003, to third place in 2004.
Only one of the 1975 top 10 boys’ names (James) is still in the top 10 in 2004, while none of the top 10 girls’ names from 1975 appear in the 2004 top 10 list;

In 1996 one quarter of all children were given a name from that year's top 10 list, this has fallen to one fifth in 2004.
In order of preference, the 2004 top ten names for boys are: Jack; Matthew; James; Adam; Daniel; Ben; Ryan; Dylan; Conor; Jamie; and for girls: Katie; Emma; Ellie; Sophie; Amy; Sarah; Chloe; Niamh; Aimee; Rachel.
