Multi-million pound grants underline UU research reputation
The University of Ulster has said its reputation as a research powerhouse for Northern Ireland was underlined when it was awarded more than £2.3 million in grants in the run-up to the end of 2004.
A total of 14 awards were made to faculties right across the University’s academic spectrum for research projects, most of which will run for at least a year.
The largest single award was £1.7 million for the Electronics, Production and Innovation Technology Centre for the Faculty of Engineering, from the EU’s Interreg programme.
Other award highlights included: £141,000 for investigation of gene therapy; £150,000 for research into commercially viable vacuum glazing manufacture; and £150,000 for investigation into nutritionally enhanced milk by natural methods which could open up new opportunities for Ireland’s dairy sector.
Professor Bernie Hannigan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) said: “Our strong and growing research base in the University has been recognised by a wide range of funding bodies.
“The scope and scale of the awards and the fact that so many of our current research projects involve partnerships with universities around the world demonstrate the international reputation enjoyed by the University of Ulster.”
In the same period of these awards, academics at the University completed 85 projects with a total value of £5.1 million, Professor Hannigan added.
