Three-minute silence held for tsunami victims
A three-minute silence has been held across Northern Ireland today in memory of those who lost their lives in the Boxing Day tsunami disaster in Asia.
The silence at 12 noon was also observed throughout Europe.
A special commemoration service conducted by the Dean of Belfast Houston McKelvey is also taking place at St Anne’s Cathedral.
Yesterday, Rev McKelvey donated the first monies from the £650,000 raised outside St Anne’s to Christian Aid for relief in the affected areas of Asia.
Presbyterian Moderator Ken Newell said Church House at Fisherwick Place, Belfast, would be open to the public from 11am to 2pm on Wednesday for prayer so people could “stop and think".
The Catholic Church, meanwhile, has called on people to observe a day of solidarity for the tsunami victims on Friday and confirmed that a special collection will also be held at Masses next Sunday.
Many other churches throughout the province have already announced that they will donate money raised from their collections to help aid relief charities.
