Sisters to search for missing brother in tsunami hit area

As the huge relief effort continues in Asia following the Boxing Day tsunami, two sisters of a missing Co Tyrone man are to travel to Thailand.

Michelle McCaughey and Darina Duffin are due to arrive in Phuket on Thursday to search for their 31-year-old brother Conor Keightley from Cookstown, who was on holiday when the tsunami struck and has not been heard from since.

The sisters, who are travelling with two other family members, say they will stay for a week to search for their brother.

Meanwhile, a Londonderry family have spoken of their relief at surviving the disaster while on holiday.

John Chambers, his wife and two daughters were in a hotel in Phuket when the huge waves struck the resort. The family said they had “luckily” stayed in that morning.

In Belfast, money raised in the ‘Black Santa’ appeal by the Dean of Belfast Houston McKelvey has topped £650,000.

Rev McKelvey said he would present the first cheque to Christian Aid on Tuesday as people continued to donate money into two aid relief barrels sitting outside St Anne's Cathedral.

The UK Government, meanwhile, has promised to match the £76 million in aid money donated by the general public.

It has so far promised £50 million to the relief effort but said it is likely to exceed public donations.

Chancellor Gordon Brown has also said the Government would be pushing members of the wealthy G7 countries to freeze foreign debts of those countries affected by the tsunami. The UK currently holds the presidency of the G7.
