Elderly man killed in road traffic collision

An elderly man has died following a road traffic accident in Co Down this morning.

The victim was driving a car which collided with a van on the city-bound slip road of the Saintfield Road at about 6.15am on Wednesday.

A woman who was also in the car is being treated in hospital however her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The accident caused major delays for rush hour traffic travelling into Belfast with the M1 city-bound closed between the Saintfield Road and Blacks Road junctions and traffic being diverted through Lisburn.

The M1 was reduced to one lane country-bound at the Saintfield Road junction while delays were also reported on the A1 headed for the Sprucefield junction in Lisburn.

The city bound lane of the M1 has since been reopened to traffic.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to the accident to contact them on 028 9065 0222.
