Construction industry growth reflects NI economic standing
Impressive growth in employment in the local construction industry, reflecting the good performance of the Northern Ireland economy over recent years, is one of a number of findings in a new report published today.
The 2004 Labour Market Bulletin, published by the Department for Employment and Learning on Tuesday, revealed that Northern Ireland’s strong economic performance in recent years was being underpinned by the lowest ever unemployment rate on record.
Other key findings in the Bulletin include:
Commenting on this year’s Bulletin, Editor Terry Morahan, said: “Since 1990, Northern Ireland has been the fastest improving economy of the 12 UK regions.
“One area of our economy which has seen noticeable growth since 1990 is the construction industry. Northern Ireland has seen an extra 22,000 jobs in this sector during this period, against a backdrop of a fall in construction related jobs in the UK as a whole.”
This year’s Bulletin, launched at the Department’s headquarters at Adelaide House in Belfast, provides a comprehensive overview of the Northern Ireland Labour Market, through more than 30 articles which include summaries of significant pieces of research.

Other key findings in the Bulletin include:
- Exceptional performance of the construction sector, adding 22,000 jobs since 1996.
- The need to widen young people’s ‘mental maps’ ie, the geographical areas in which they look for jobs.
- The loss of call centre jobs to India (at least as far as NI is concerned) is a myth.
