Public debate to discuss smoking ban
A public debate examining the current controversy surrounding smoking bans is to take place at Belfast City Hospital later this week.
Organised by the Northern Ireland Forum for Ethics in Medicine and Health Care, Wednesday’s debate, entitled ‘Health fascists and smokers' rights: banning smoking in public places?’, will feature Dr John Catherwood, from Queen's University and Dr Gerry Elwee, from the Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF).
Dr Catherwood, a lecturer in applied ethics, based in the School of Philosophical Studies, will highlight the need to protect smokers' rights, while Dr Elwee will outline his reasons why smoking should be banned in public places.
Last month, the UCF called on local government to follow the Scottish Executive’s decision to ban smoking in all enclosed public places in Scotland.
Mr McElwee said the decision had shown “political courage” in making Scottish public places smokefree and that it put Scotland at the head of a “growing international movement to control the damage tobacco does to health”. “It is now time for the UK Government and NIO to follow that example,” he added.
Wednesday’s debate, in the Postgraduate lecture theatre, begins at 6.30pm.
